AFTER weeks of heated negotiations, the Seychelles UNWTO Secretary General candidate Alain St Anges has thrown in the towel, paving way for the African Union (AU) endorsed candidate Eng Walter Mzembi.
The fomer Seychelles tourism minster made the announcement yesterday (9/05/2017), three days before the election wich will be held in Madrid Spain on Friday (12/05/2017) in Madrid Spain.
The developments come amid widepread calls by African Union tourism ministers and governments who were pushing for the withdrawal of Mr St Anges candidature from the race after reveleations that his presence could dilute the African vote and weaken Africa’s chances of winning.
Earlier yesterday, the Seyechelles President Danny Faure chaired an Extra-Ordinary Cabinet meeting at which the Seychelles Cabinet considerd a fomarl request from the African Union Commission for Seychelles to withdraw the candidature of Mr St Ange for the election of the post for SG of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
Efforts to get a comment from the AU candidate Eng Walter Mzembi were fruitless.
Meanwhile, St Anges’s withdrawal from the race means Mzembi will be racing against four other candidates namely Márcio Favilla (Brazil), Jaime Alberto Cabal Sanclemente (Colombia), Zurab Pololikashvili (Georgia), Young-shim Dho (South Korea).
