CHITUNGWIZA Town Council has finally elected a substantive mayor 7 months after the nullifications of Councillor Gift Tsverere election to the top seat by the High Court.

The new Mayor Councillor Lovemore Maiko of MDC Alliance polled 16 votes against Zanu PF’s Councillor Kevin Mutimbanyoka who managed only 7 votes.

Councillor Musa Makweza of MDC Alliance was elected Deputy Mayor with 16 votes outclassing Zanu PF’s candidate Councillor John Matienga who got 5 votes while 2 ballots were deemed to be spoiled votes.

Speaking after his election, Councillor Maiko promised to improve the water and sewer situation which have troubled the highly populated city for many years.

“We want to make sure that we meet the expectation of our people in terms of providing quality service delivery by making sure that we deal with issues to do with water and sewer reticulations and issues to do with solid waste.

“We are also going to deal with issues around infrastructure development, improving our road networks and also making sure that we do have space for small to medium enterprises,” he said.

It however remains unclear how Councillor Maiko was preferred this time around ahead of Tsverere who had won the nod before the nullification in September 2018.

Chitungwiza Town Council is dominated by MDC Alliance which has about 21 Councillors while Zanu PF has.
