Energy efficiency research on the cards

By Nomthandazo Gabi
GOVERNMENT is set to roll out a research network on Energy Efficiency (EE), through industry, universities, and technical colleges, so as to improve the efficiency of research promotion and translate the findings into practice more quickly.
Zimbabwe has been faced with energy challenges since the late 2000s which saw massive power outages around the country of up to 16hrs a day
The government of Zimbabwe recognises that the development of energy efficiency in the country requires broad-based and uniquely networked energy research so as to try out viable strategies for the future and bring new high-efficiency technologies faster on the market.
Furthermore, the government is to support sourcing of demonstration projects nationwide for various energy efficiency of technologies sourced locally or externally.
It will also promote the development and dissemination of innovative energy-efficient technologies from Zimbabwe’s institution and organisation which will affect enterprises new opportunities in the local, regional and international markets.
Zimbabwe undertakes to create an environment that strengthens local and international participation in programmes such as research, design, manufacturing marketing and use of energy-efficient cookstoves which will be adopted as part of a wider strategy to reduce consumption of wood-fuel, bioenergy and waste.
In addition, according to the national energy efficiency policy Zimbabwe intends to support continuously ongoing basis policy research to provide recommendations, social and environmental impacts of efficient energy supply-demand, findings that can be used to enhance the energy-efficient improvement program.
The Ministry of Energy and Power Development has committed itself to the development and adoption of renewable technologies (RETs) in the country.
MEPD has also established a technical department that is responsible for energy conservation technologies and techniques as well as the promotion of new and renewable sources of energy.
The mission of the department is to develop and promote increased use of renewable energy sources and technologies to ensure efficient product and utilisation of resources in the country.
