Gems arrive home to Hero’s welcome

Zimbabwe Senior Netball team affectionately known all over the World as the “GEMS”, were hosted to a hero welcome dinner last night at the Rainbow Towers Hotel.

The Gems arrived home Wednesday to a rousing welcome at the RGM international Airport. Flag-waving fans and family amassing the airport chanted as the players went through the airport.

Subsequently, National Foods treated the World Cup number 8 Gems to a red carpet welcome dinner Thursday evening.

Gems won the hearts of many Zimbabweans across the globe by their sheer brilliance and exhilarating performance at the 2019 Netball World Cup in London. In those two and half weeks Zimbabweans, locals and around the world united in celebrating the senior netball team’s eight-position accomplishment.

Addressing attendees, Zimbabwe Netball Association (ZINA) President L Chipandu, expressed their gratitude to the sponsors who made the journey somewhat bearable for the national team.

She emphasized on the need to maintain their relationship for the future, and termed their stint working relationship as an “engagement ceremony”.

“I would like to thank all our sponsors that made the journey easy for the Gems to participate at the World Cup, on behalf of the ZINA. I want to say to all our sponsors what we have had is an engagement ceremony, so we will be waiting for the marriage. The national team needs your support and we can also be good administrators if we have enough funding and sponsorships, “ she said.

National Foods Chief Executive Michael Lashbrook on behalf of his company, committed to donate food hampers jam-packed with all the National foods products to each member of the team for the next 12 months.

“We are proud of the National team and as National Foods we will provide each team member with National foods hampers for the next 12 months to show our support to the team” he said

After qualifying for the first time the senior netball team was faced with multiple financial constrains, however a number of corporates and well wishers contributed to necessity the team’s participation at the world cup.

The Zimbabwe netball team will be hoping to maintain the same momentum at their next international games, which will be held in Cape Town, South Africa in September.
