Mohadi to answer on missing diamonds

Mines and Energy Parliamentary Portfolio Committee has summoned Vice President Kembo Mohadi, current government ministers and former ministers to answer on the alleged missing US$15billion diamond revenue.

According to former President Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe lost about US$15 billion in diamond revenue through illicit deals and smuggling at Chiadzwa in Marange.

Parliament in exercising its oversight role is trying to ascertain the authenticity of the US$15billion through the Mines and Energy Committee.

In a statement, the Committee revealed that more than 18 officials and companies will appear before it on the 9th of April.

“The following people have been invited to appear and give evidence on the diamond sector to the aforesaid Committee on Monday 9 April 2018 at 09:00hrs in the Senate Chamber:

“Dr A Chihuri, Commissioner General G. Matanga, Mr R Chingodza, Amb.  Moyo CIO, Mr W. Manungo, Hon P. A. Chinamasa, Ms. F. Mazani ZIMRA,  Mr G. Masimirembwa, Mining Houses: ZMDC/ZCDC and Board, MMCZ and Board, Prof. F. Gudyanga, Mr T. Musukutwa, Mr T. Biti- Apology, Marange Development Trust, Ex Mbada Diamonds Workers, Mr L. Kurotwi, Hon. K. D. Mohadi, Mr Rushwaya, Mr Matshiya,” said the Committee.

Vice President Mohadi was Minister of Home Affairs at the time and the police also had a concession as does the military and central intelligence organisation.

The police and Ministry of Mines officials are also accused of raiding the Mbada Diamonds concession in a mafia-like style and stole a box of diamonds.

Speaking during the committee a few weeks ago, Chairperson Temba Mliswa said it was only prudent that all ministers who served in the concerned ministries be invited to answer for themselves.

“I was talking to the committee and we found it prudent to invite the then Minister of Home Affairs now VP Mohadi, then Minister of Defence Sydney Sekeramayi and then State Security Minister Didymus Mutasa, so it’s proper that they are here.

“It’s only fair and it’s only proper that those ministers who were presiding over those ministries are equally here and we shall be writing to them,” he said.
