Prospect Lithium steps up to improve conditions for workers

By Laurence Kanyasa

Mining firm, Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe has stepped up efforts to improve working conditions for workers as the company unveiled new houses and administration block for its staffers this week in Goromonzi.

Speaking during a tour of the new residence and administration blocks, Minister of State for Mashonaland East Province Apollonia Munzverengwi said this development is a testament and commitment by the Chinese firm to ensure workers have good working conditions

“This is a welcome development in Mashonaland East Province and the country at large, it is time we show the world how government efforts have brought a huge change for our local people,” said Munzverengwi.

She went on to say, contrary to speculation by some sections of the public that the Chinese do not care for the workers, the work being done here has shown itself to the world that more can be achieved.

“A healthy worker is a productive worker, as such, the government commends huge strides taken by PLZ in improving living standards for their employees,” she said.

The minister reiterated that the government is committed to ensuring that more investment from across the globe comes into the country as this will create decent jobs for locals.

She added that companies like PLZ are serious about development; we would like to welcome more companies to invest in the country so that the world knows Zimbabwe is Open for Business.

Minister Munzverengwi implored Lithium companies to value-add their produce and manufacture batteries locally.

Speaking at the same occasion PLZ Assistant General Manager (AGM) Rugare Dhobbie deciphered the company’s journey since its acquisition in 2021 saying major developmental projects have been undertaken both onsite and within the community in Goromonzi.

“As a firm, we pride ourselves on having done many projects on site by building new residential blocks for employees, at the same time PLZ has built new police bases, facelifted schools, bridges, and clinics amongst other projects,” said Dhobbie.

She went on to say Prospect Lithium is committed to ensuring a safe and healthy environment that is conducive to workers

“In addition to houses and administration blocks, recreational facilities have been put in place to encourage wellness for PLZ employees,” said the AGM.

Dhobbie emphasized the company’s commitment to follow government regulations in line with international standards to ensure safety and development.

“PLZ will continue upgrading its standards to ensure the company’s competitiveness on a global scale,” said Dhobbie.
